FAQs about book editing

Today’s episode is inspired by some questions I have been asked recently. I wanted to provide some transparency and go through these questions.

1.) What type of editing do you need?

This question is not the most simple to answer. There is developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, and lastly, proofreading. It just depends which type you truly need, and I can work with you to figure out the best fit.

2.) Should I get beta readers before I hire an editor?

Yes! I think this makes the most sense.

3.) How do I get started editing?

My biggest recommendation is to beta read for other people. Giving feedback will help you train your eye and get used to giving feedback.

4.) Have you ever had a manuscript that had no mistakes and you gave no feedback?

This was a huge fear of mine. I was so afraid to come across a manuscript that did not need editing. So far, I haven’t experienced this. There is at least some sort of feedback you can give.

5.) Why do you not want to be named in a client’s book?

Because it’s up to the client to do what they would like with the edits and feedback. They could decide not to use my feedback and they could do that with a lot of my changes. Then, if they reference me, it wouldn’t be my true skills showcased as an editor.

6.) What genre do you edit the most?

I am a fiction editor. My most common genres are YA fantasy and romance. I don’t specify - this is just what mostly comes to me work-wise.
